The Colorful Conversationalist

Every great design begins with a feeling. For this family, it started with a single color—Sherwin-Williams Country Squire. The deep teal became the foundation for a home that needed to feel both fresh and expressive. The clients wanted light and brightness, but they didn’t want predictable. They wanted something that made a statement.

We began with clean lines and a neutral base—pale oak flooring, white walls, and streamlined forms—knowing it would give the bolder elements space to breathe. Texture was used to soften transitions between rooms and materials. Color was used strategically, anchoring focal points and layering personality without overpowering the architecture.

Designed for Connection
The kitchen, dining, and living areas were designed as one continuous sequence. To unify the space, we repeated key materials across focal elements—a custom range hood and a fireplace wall with matching detail and finish. The island serves as a central gathering point, with teal velvet stools that pull the signature palette into focus.

We incorporated brass lighting and hardware to warm the palette, but always in balance. In the dining room, a wallpapered wall in Country Squire sets the tone for evening gatherings. The chandelier was selected to play with scale and cast light evenly, enhancing the verticality of the room.

Space to Host, Space to Unwind
Because the clients love to host, we included multiple areas designed for gathering. A wet bar, tucked into custom cabinetry, opens to the kitchen but reads as its own moment. The game room takes a different turn—moody, enclosed, and designed for after-hours energy. There, deeper tones and natural woods create contrast from the openness of the rest of the house.

In the main living area alone, there are 26 places to sit—each one thoughtfully arranged to encourage conversation, connection, or quiet retreat. We prioritized open circulation so guests could move freely from one zone to the next, with no visual or physical barriers between cooking, dining, and lounging. Arched black steel doors at the entry introduce just enough formality, setting a grounded tone before giving way to the openness beyond.

Form Meets Function
In the private areas of the home, we focused on rhythm and restraint. In the primary bedroom, custom wall paneling brings depth without noise. The bedding was designed in-house to carry the teal palette forward in a more subdued way.

Bathrooms became an exercise in composition. Every vanity wall was given its own identity, balancing materiality with function. In the primary bath, the dual vanity layout prioritizes symmetry and flow, while the walk-in shower uses a vertical inlay to draw the eye and add subtle movement. Elsewhere, we introduced tonal contrasts—like a pink vanity paired with brushed brass or a green tiled tub surround punctuated by sculptural fixtures—to bring personality to everyday routines.

Details with Intention
We treated every detail as an opportunity to reinforce structure and purpose. The echo between the hood and the fireplace wall wasn't accidental—it was a way to draw the eye across the room and create cohesion. The bar nook and the game room were carved out with intention, designed to invite without disrupting.

This project wasn’t about layering more. It was about refining the right elements, using them with care, and knowing when to let the architecture speak for itself.

A Home with a Point of View
The Colorful Conversationalist is proof that light doesn’t have to mean simple, and bold doesn’t have to mean loud. It’s a home that lives easily, entertains well, and expresses exactly who it belongs to.
