Elegant Eclectic Design

At Susan Semmelmann Interiors, we always say that our style is your style, and this week's style feature is a very elegant take on eclectic design! We love working with our clients to ensure that their personalities and preferences are fully represented in their design plans, and eclectic homes always have a beautiful story to tell through the highly unique and personalized pieces featured throughout. But just what is eclectic style? It's often confused with bohemian style, or at least the terms are sometimes used interchangeably. They are definitely two distinct design styles! Bohemian really has no rules, favoring personal taste above any overarching design principles. On the other hand, eclectic bends the rules a bit but doesn't break with the overall principles of design. It encompasses a range of periods and styles married together through color, shape, and texture. It also relies on balance, proportion, and scale to make it cohesive and striking, introducing varying elements with restrain and an eye on high design. The eclectic palette can vary, but as you can see in these beautiful images, it's best to stay with a foundation of neutrals to tie all the elements together and highlight the showstoppers! Features such as personal art collections, sculptural lighting and furniture design, distinctive accessories, and impactful color combinations all come to the forefront against a neutral backdrop. We love the discovery that comes with this design style, getting to know our clients' hearts and passions who entrust us with creating their havens and showcasing their treasures. Let Susan Semmelmann Interiors help you highlight your home and your treasures with an elegant eclectic design! Design/image credit to @lauracsingleton @jroman1964 @glamhouseofdecor @will_be_studio

Lighting by Design

At Susan Semmelmann Interiors, we love to design with light! Of course, it’s essential that each space we create has the proper amount of light, but more importantly, we focus on how those spaces are lit. Once we determine the “how,” then we turn on the “wow!” Lighting should be utilized as an accent or complement to design and décor elements. In other words, we aren’t merely looking for function; we’re looking for fashion, ambiance, creativity, artistry, and originality – placing a unique fingerprint on every room with so many different ways to illuminate them. These images show what can be accomplished when lighting designs are integrated into the home during the construction process. Design features like beautifully crafted cabinetry, stairways, and mirrors can be enhanced by backlighting or underlighting, then layered with gorgeous pendants, chandeliers, or directional lighting to complete the composition of each space. With endless attention to detail, the big-picture result is planned, purposeful, and positively stunning. Providing an opportunity to preplan and prewire the home for these fabulous features is where the process of construction detailing shines – it’s the perfect time to add the little things that make the big magic happen! We bring the same personal and intentional approach to every client, every home, every room, so let Susan Semmelmann Interiors help you light your home by design! Skylight, Sky Bright!

At Susan Semmelmann Interiors, we love to bring light, life, and beauty to our clients' homes in every way we possibly can. This week we highlight the skylight as a home design feature that invites a gorgeous, natural vibe to your spaces. For this post, we'll focus on the bath; after all, it's where we begin and end our days, and as you can see, skylights provide a beautiful way to enjoy the ever-changing light and daily rhythms from sunrise to sunset. As many of our clients enjoy more time at home these days for work, school, entertainment, or all of the above, we've noticed a strong trend; we receive request after request for bright, light, open, and airy interiors. By definition, bright means ‘shining with light, describing anything that emits, reflects, or is full of light — like the bright moon, the bright sky, or a bright, well-lit room. Bright can also mean vivid or vibrant.' Well said! Even at night, there is a brightness to enjoy through the moon and the stars. What better way to accomplish this request than to have a direct view of the sky from inside the home! This feature can be perfectly placed and expertly integrated into your home design during the construction detailing process, and we highly recommend it if you like the idea of bringing a little more of the outside in. Let Susan Semmelmann Interiors help you create the perfect space to rise with the sun and go to bed with the moon with the addition of a stunning bathroom skylight! Design with an Edge

At Susan Semmelmann Interiors, we love working with our clients to incorporate design elements with a stylish edge. With that in mind, this week, we are featuring live edge furniture! What is live edge? It is a type of wood-crafted furniture that maintains the natural edges in the design of each piece; this makes every creation truly unique! As you can see, depending on the craftsperson's style, the results can vary anywhere from beautifully raw and organic to elegantly sleek and sophisticated. Some artisans leave the naturally occurring holes and cracks, resulting in a lovely sculptural feel, while others fill them with clear or colored resins to highlight the spaces for a more modern twist. Each style brings its own show-stopping results, creating high art for the home with this gorgeous natural material. Are you getting the idea that we have a huge crush on these designs? We've recently had the privilege of working with Taracea Furniture and Live Edge Lust Design Studio on several projects for our clients, including the dream home, and the results are simply stunning with each amazing install. The flowing lines of these designs are so peaceful and soothing; it's like inviting the outside in, and these pieces provide that element of life-giving beauty in a one-of-a-kind package created just for you! Let Susan Semmelmann Interiors help you bring life and artistry to your home design with the addition of live edge furniture! Crazy for Concrete

At Susan Semmelmann Interiors, we are crazy for concrete! Once used mainly for foundations and behind-the-scenes structural applications, this amazing material is experiencing a rebirth as an artful design element for interior spaces with jaw-dropping results. Concrete is multi-faceted in its uses, and these images show some of the gorgeous possibilities available as fabulous interior design options. With its edgy, industrial vibe, exposed concrete lends an urban, contemporary feel, it works well with other organic materials like rough-hewn beams and warm wood accents while also being entirely at home as a complement to a modern, sleek aesthetic. We love working with our clients to add concrete features during the construction detailing phase of planning and design, and we are doing that more and more often these days. Whether they envision a larger scale application or a smaller focal accent, it is vital that we integrate it into the plans from the ground up to create a cohesive flow and continuity of design. With its moody appeal and a beautifully grounding effect, concrete can add a show-stopping view to any interior. Let Susan Semmelmann Interiors help change your view and make you crazy for concrete! The Nuance of Neutrals

At Susan Semmelmann interiors, we love the challenge and adventure that comes with each new client consultation. As we always say, “our style is your style,” so we are an open book when planning and casting vision for every new project. Often, clients ask us to design spaces around a soothing, neutral palette, and this is one of our favorite things to do because it opens up endless creative possibilities. When working with neutrals, design elements like texture, pattern, line, and shape take the forefront. Of course, natural light becomes the star of the show in these rooms as it brings depth, dimension, and striking perspective at different times of the day and night. Understandably, this is a go-to vibe right now, peaceful and calming, but not dull by any definition. In these gorgeous images, notice that the overall effect is serene, and the eye immediately begins to scan the elements of design that complement and contrast one another so beautifully and seamlessly. Another benefit of this color palette is the feeling of space and expansion it provides, sightlines are uninterrupted, and there is a sense of extra breathing room in the atmosphere – can't we all use a bit more of that these days? Let Susan Semmelmann Interiors help you expand your breathing room by adding the lovely nuance of neutrals to your home design! A Passion for Pendants

At Susan Semmelmann Interiors, we love every single detail that goes into the design of a gorgeous kitchen, including the addition of beautiful pendant lighting over the island. The key to cohesive kitchen design is knowing how to add layer upon layer of materials to create a harmonious aesthetic. Once the foundation is established, design elements like fabulous light fixtures become the cherry on top. Pendant lights add brilliant personality to a space; they bring a unique touch that we like to think of as fashion accessories for a  perfectly polished look. This is your opportunity to have fun, get creative, add sparkle to your kitchen, and put a spotlight on your personal style.  Do you prefer dramatic and bold? Sleek and elegant? These images highlight various options that will inspire you and get your creative wheels spinning if you are thinking of adding or editing this feature in your home. The Elegance of Arches

At Susan Semmelmann Interiors, we love working with our clients to add beautiful architectural elements to their home design plans; this week, we highlight elegant arches! The construction detailing process allows us to add these stunning features to the foundation of a home’s design, establishing unique character and setting the groundwork for all of the details that go into the finished product. The addition of arches brings organic motion and flow to a space, providing visual interest and soft lines that are pleasing to the eye. Notice the hypnotic repetition of pattern in the long hallway and the artful variation of arches used to create the open-air corridor; they both add bold personality to the design and act as an invitation to approach and explore. Arches also provide a welcome interruption to the dominant linear lines inherent in the construction of a home. The juxtaposition of curves against angles is shown in the kitchen design as the barrel curvature of the tiled ceiling and arched window play against the strong lines of the marble island and mullioned window. The living room image also highlights the tension between curves and lines with its playful choice of doorways designed to offset one another and echo the structure of the room. This feature can easily be at home in any design plan; let Susan Semmelmann Interiors show you the possibilities with the addition of elegant arches! Inspired by our daily mindset, we naturally have an affinity for the shape, form, and organic flow of these stunning spiral staircases. As these images show, this design element is beautifully sculptural; it becomes a centerpiece of visual art within a room. The variety of materials and subtle nuances in form and movement that make this feature unique are seemingly endless, from bold to sleek to whimsical, and beyond, the options are only limited by the imagination. With so many people leaning towards neutral, organic palettes these days, rust is just the ticket to spice up any space. For such bold color, it has a peaceful, calming effect that also lends to a stylish, retro appeal. It feels like a throwback, but stars as a comeback. These beautiful images prove its versatility and star quality, whether elegantly layered into a soft, soothing aesthetic, or perfectly placed as a focal point, it catches the eye and demands attention. Wild About White

At Susan Semmelmann Interiors, we are absolutely wild about using shades of white in interior design. As these gorgeous images show, designing with a foundation of white creates a serene and luxurious spa-like environment, and we believe that everyone can use a little bit more of that feeling right now! If only one room in the home is claimed as the go-to relaxation spot, a redo in white is worth considering. In much the same way that “white noise” quiets and soothes and “white space” makes a printed page less crowded, white décor has the same visually calming effect in home design. As more people are working, educating, and entertaining from home, it makes sense to reassess home design and decor to ensure that rooms feel more tranquil, open, and spacious. In doing so, family members will be more peaceful and productive, and guests will feel completely at ease. Sculptor Jonathan Milne once said, “Working in white makes people look into it. White is ethereal. There’s a purity to it; it makes things look elevated in a way. There’s a whole palette of white.” We love getting creative with our clients who prefer a white, monochromatic palette. With so many shades and tones to layer that perfectly complement one another, white on white is both elegant and inviting and can be perfectly suited to anyone’s individual preferences and tastes. If you are looking to create an environment of peace and luxury in your home, let Susan Semmelmann Interiors help you become wild about white! Hollywood Glamour

At Susan Semmelmann Interiors, we’re always up for a little glamour and romance, old-Hollywood style. The combination of smoky neutrals like soft taupes and sable grays, lit to perfection, creates a space that is nothing short of pure magic. Add Art Deco-inspired architectural and design elements to amplify the atmosphere, and you have a moment frozen in time. As you can see in these stunning images, the muted tones and diffused light create a mystique, evoking a mood that invites us to linger for a while, which goes to show that you can have a space infused with luxury that is also welcoming, approachable, and very comfortable. This look is gorgeous and timeless and brings to mind a bygone era that has the same allure and appeal today as it did back then. When working with clients, our goal is to transport them with design, to create spaces that become their daily escape from the world, and provide them a haven to share with friends and family. Not Your Basic Black

At Susan Semmelmann Interiors, we love the elegance of using the color black in home design. Spaces showcasing black as a focal point are sleek and sophisticated. It is the perfect backdrop to set off a feature color, but can also stand alone as a striking statement. Far from being dark and daunting, when appropriately implemented, this bold color can be classic, crisp, and clean or convey more of a luxurious, black tie formality. We often work with clients who prefer key elements of black in their home design plans, ranging from smaller accents like accessories, lighting and trim to bolder applications like paint, cabinetry, flooring, and stone features. However it is utilized, black has a grounding effect that anchors a room and catches the eye. These images show how beautifully the color black can be used to structure a space and bring showstopping results. Let Susan Semmelmann Interiors help heighten your home design plans with some not so basic black! Design credit to @ferrisrafauli @pullcast_jewelryhardware @maximillion_design
